Product Review
Equipped with a digital clock/timer tuned by a radio receiver to the U.S. atomic clock, this coffeemaker brews up to twelve 5-ounce cups of coffee and, because the clock/timer can be programmed up to 24 hours in advance, will begin the brewing process automatically for wake-up coffee. The clock is split-second accurate because it automatically adjusts, if necessary, to the atomic clock's signals six times every 24 hours. The atomic clock, operated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, is one of the most accurate in the world. The coffeemaker brews at a high temperature for speed--35 seconds per cup, with a four-cup minimum. For a quick pour, it automatically pauses the brewing process for 30 seconds when the carafe is removed from its warming plate. The glass carafe has a guard to protect the knuckles and is dishwasher-safe. On the coffeemaker's left side is a transparent gauge for monitoring the water level. The filter basket accommodates cone-shaped paper filters and removes for filling and cleaning. Lightweight and clad in bright plastic, the 1,450-watt coffeemaker has push-in cord storage, measures 13-1/2 inches high, 8 inches wide, and 9-1/2 inches deep, and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

Product Reviews Though this coffeemaker produces great coffee, it's most unique feature, the automatically updated clock, a feature Salton makes sure you notice by prominently displaying it on the box and including it in its name, "The Perfect Time", is unreliable. When I brought it home and plugged it in the first time, the clock did automatically set itself, evidently using a signal to and from the US Atomic Clock. Daylight Savings Time arrived yesterday and I expected to find the clock updated as Salton claims will happen. It was not. I waited 24 hours. No update. I unplugged the machine, thinking it might reset itself. It did not. After reading some other reviews, I learned some customers were turning their clocks west and moving them away from other appliances. I did this, but no change. There is no way to manually change the clock - you must wait for a signal in order to change the time. I finally talked to a Salton representative. She asked if the coffeemaker was near other appliances (no, I moved it) and then she asked if it was near fluorescent lighting (well, yes, it is in my kitchen). Her advice: unplug it, move it to another room, for at least 48 hours, and wait to see if you get a signal. So, my "Perfect Time" coffeemaker is now plugged into an outlet in my livingroom, just the place I always planned to have my coffeemaker. Should this advice work (I am highly skeptical), I guess I can expect to be moving my coffeemaker in and out of the kitchen at least twice a year. I suppose that is a minor inconvenience, but I am annoyed at the absurdity of it all. Melitta coffeemakers make great tasting coffee, but in the future I won't buy one with the "Perfect Time" feature - I can set my own clock.
